How many stair treads do you need?

Count the number of steps you actually walk on, not the number of risers. A Jsei 15-pack of stair treads covers 15 walkable steps; most US single-family staircases have 13–16. If you plan to leave the top landing bare, subtract one.

Count the treads(the flat surfaces) from the bottom step to the top floor — do not count the landing.

Deduct any step you want to leave bare, such as a carpeted top step already covered.

Add one spare if the staircase gets heavy pet traffic, since one tread will be in the wash.

Round up to the pack size — a 15-pack for 13 steps is normal, and spares are useful at the most-used step.

Do non-slip stair treads damage wood stairs or leave residue?

A TPR self-grip backing does not need adhesive, so there is no glue residue to sand off. The real risks to a wood staircase are trapped moisture and grit under the mat, both of which are controlled by lifting the treads periodically and keeping them dry.

Clean and dry the step before the first installation — dust stops the backing from contacting the wood.

Press the full surface for 30 seconds, especially the nosing area where feet land.

Test with five firm steps on the tread before using the staircase normally.

Lift and wipe every 4–6 weeks in humid months; air dry both the step and the tread before re-laying.

How do you measure stair treads before ordering?

Polypropylene is the better choice where water and grease dominate, because the fibre repels liquid instead of absorbing it. Polyester is the better choice where foot comfort matters more, because the pile is softer — but spills must be wiped promptly.

What to Test How to Measure Judgment Threshold
Tread Depth Measure from front nosing back to riser root Mat depth ≤ Measured depth − 0.5 in
Tread Width Wall to wall, or wall to open edge ≥ 1 in clearance on each side
Front Edge Profile Inspect for bullnose rounded edge Bullnose edge → Select bullnose style
Tread Depth Consistency Spot-check top & bottom tread depth If difference > 0.5 in, size by the smallest depth

Dimension Jsei Stair Treads Stair Runner
Coverage Individual per step, original floor exposed between treads Continuous coverage over the full stairway
Installation TPR self-adhesive backing, no glue or nails Usually requires tack strips or professional fitting
Cleaning Individually removable, machine washable Whole-rug cleaning; professional or large-capacity washer needed
Partial Replacement Single worn tread can be replaced separately Damage in one spot often requires full runner replacement
Edge Hazard Risk Flooring exposed between steps, remains hard surface No seams; risk concentrates if edges lift
Ideal For Wood stairs, pets / seniors, DIY installation Existing carpet base, seamless continuous visual effect

Stair treads or a stair runner — which is safer for dogs and older adults?

Stair treads are the safer choice when the staircase is wood, the household has a dog or an older adult, and you want the option to remove and wash each piece. A stair runner is the safer choice when the staircase is already carpeted or when you want continuous coverage with no gaps between pieces.

Stair Treads FAQS

What is a bullnose stair tread?

A bullnose tread has a rounded front edge that wraps over the nosing of the step. It protects the most worn part of a wood stair and removes the sharp lip a toe or paw can catch on.

Will stair treads work on carpeted stairs?

Not reliably. A TPR backing needs a hard, smooth surface to grip; on carpet, two soft surfaces slide against each other. Use treads on bare wood, tile or vinyl stairs.

How do I keep stair treads from shifting when a dog runs up?

Press the tread down across its full area for 30 seconds on a clean dry step, then test it with five firm steps. If a tread still creeps, the step likely has wax, polish or dust on it — clean with a damp cloth and let it dry fully.

Can stair treads be cut to fit an odd step width?

Cutting a tread exposes the backing edge, so trim only where the cut will sit against a wall, and keep the bound edge on the open side. Measure twice: width, depth and nosing shape all matter.

Are stair treads safe for toddlers and pets?

Jsei stair treads use OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified materials and a grippy surface that gives paws and small feet something to push against. They reduce slip risk on bare wood; they are not a substitute for a stair gate or supervision.

You get what you pay for.

Good quality stair treads. Holding up very well especially with 3 dogs and a 4 yr old. I had recently ripped the carpet off my stairs and refinished them so I was hesitant to use the adhesive backing. But after trying it out I can tell you it's truly safe for finished wooden stairs. The self adhesive backing works kinda like plastic cling wrap. Once you place them they are going to stay there, the hold is rather impressive. With these stair treads you definitely get what you pay for. I had recently tried out a set of stair treads that looked similar but they cost about half the price. Unfortunately the cheap set literally fell apart after 6 weeks. It's been around that long with this set and they still look brand new after a quick vacuuming. My dog's also appreciate the carpets on the stairs and it makes it much easier for them to get up and down compared to the glossy hardwood stairs. You definitely get what you pay for.

Easy to install

They stick good. The backing is just like silicone strips. I wish the corners had something more like adhesive to hold them down though. Also wish they were bigger

Great safety measure, quick install - Non-Slip Stair Tread Carpet Pads

These work great, blend well enough into our original lighter oak finish wood flooring, and were a quick and easy solve to our growing concerns on our wood staircase. We have had several dogs come visit and 2 recently move in, plus human guests, who often slipped at the bottom steps of the old staircase in our rental which has classic polished wood flooring. It was becoming a real safety concern after watching the paws of our older golden retriever slip as he moves to the front door. These provide a significant extra grip for everyone who uses the stairs, and also help dampen any noise from our central staircase. It took me roughly 30 minutes to install these on 15 steps, including removing the packaging material and running a quick vacuum over each carpet pad to remove the loose fibers after installing. (As you sweep your hand over each step to push down on the sticky backing, some of the carpet fibers will come loose, but it wasn’t noticeable in the finished look.) You will want a mini vacuum or a lint roller handy while installing. You’ll also want a small trash bag to collect the backing film as you install these - the film is easy enough to remove (and is split conveniently in the middle to assist,) but it’s also thin enough that I had several smaller rips meaning lots of little bits of plastic. The sticky backing is a bit like 90% cured silicone - it doesn’t leave any marks, and is easy to reposition, but you don’t want the sticky surface contacting dust or dog hair etc which block some of the adhesion. I don’t have any concerns about damage to the wood staircase in our rental though, and the carpet pads 100% aren’t shifting about, so the adhesive is just about perfect to me.

Nice quality!

These stair treads are very nice. I like that the edges have a finished look to them too. The color looks great on the darker stained stairs. They were very easy to install, and they have enough stickiness to them that they don't shift on the stairs. They are perfect for protecting my stairs from getting scratched. They are also machine washable. Great quality. I'd highly recommend!

They don't slide! Sweep up nicely and are cozy under the foot

The non slip grippers are great!! They don't shift under our feet at all! I haven't tried washing them yet but they seem to be made well and I think will hold up great! They domt seem to stain easily and sweep up nicely. The color was as expected too!

Does the job :)

As you can see from the photo, I've got an old old staircase with slippery brown paint. I wanted something to make it more comfortable to go up and down, especially for visiting fur babies with paws that slide on the way down. Each carpet panel has a plastic film that is sewn right onto the back. As you can see in the picture, you separate it from the middle and just tear the plastic off. The tacky treds grab onto the stair and they stay in place pretty well. I was worried about that part, but they don't move at all. I don't think it's technically an adhesive though, so they're easy enough to pull back up.

Soft good looking and stick down well.

So I live in a bit of an old house, the original stairs are over 100 years old and they are a little beat up. We have an older dog that needs to climb them and has been having a bit of trouble with the old hardwood and so we thought that these stair carpets would be a nice addition. They come pre-packaged with a plastic film that is sewn in the bottom that you need to peel back exposing the sticky silicone underside. It's a bit annoying to take that plastic off when you install them the first time, but that's my only very minor complaint. In general they work great. They stick down well but, If you need to move them, they pull up cleanly, leaving no residue or damage. They don't move around at all when they're stuck down. Additionally, they're very soft and comfortable on the feet. They seem to be fairly well made and study, and I think they'll last a good while. We've only had them up for a couple weeks but the fact that they're easy to remove and washable It's going to be very helpful.Overall I'm very pleased with this product

Pretty darn good

So this are a great color.... I had enough for my basement stairs plus 2 so I did my garage steps too... They are soft nice cuts of rugs; no chemical smell... That took me a total of maybe 45 mins to install. However, I did gave them 4 stars for 3 the following reasons....1. I wish they were shipped flat so there wasn't a little bump where they have been folded for so long.... minor issue. I see that revolving itself in a day or so... and2. I wish the grip was sticker.... they stay put on my plywood stairs but could be a bit more clingy/sticky.3. It's a bit tricky getting the plastic off the back in 2 big pieces because it's so thin. Again, minor issue... my technique improved with each step LOL.

They stick firmly to my hardwood floor

They were super easy to install, and they stay in place without any adhesive, which means no sticky residue on my hardwood floor. Add a nice touch to my staircase, making it look even better. If you have pets or kids, these are a must-have for safety. These are just perfect!!

Great quality stair tread pieces. Some small annoyances

Overall quality is decent.Has some sticky rubber on the bottom covered with plastic. The plastic does not come off in one piece easily, it is SEWEN in.which is quite annoying. every time you rip it it basically tears into a small pieceThe rest is stuck in the stitching around the sides. Overall i don't think you need those pieces on the sideto stop it from sliding so still a good product.Would recommend.

Not bad at all for the price

Not bad at all, easy to install and quality is pretty good, maybe a little thin. The worst part is removing the backing on each tread

Awesome alternative than paying for carpet!

My husband and I finished our basement ourselves and didn't want to spend much on the stairs, so we just painted them and used these. EVERYONE compliments them. Seriously all the hard work we did on the basement and this is what people notice lol! So yea, definitely a great purchase. They do not slide at all! Super soft too!

Safe and Stylish Stair Upgrade

I recently installed these stair treads on my wooden steps, and they've been a fantastic addition. The light grey color adds a modern touch to my home, and the 0.4" thickness provides a comfortable cushion underfoot. The TPE backing ensures they stay in place without any adhesive, which is great for preserving the wood finish.Installation was a breeze—just lay them down, and they grip securely. They're also easy to clean; a quick vacuum keeps them looking fresh. If you're looking to enhance safety and style on your stairs, these treads are a solid choice.

Soft carpet and great size

These are really nice stair covers and feel great under foot. I used carpet tape to keep them in place so the sticky bottom made that a little difficult to install. They don't stick on their own in my home because I have dogs who are very rough on rugs when they rip through the home. Using carpet tape worked well but took much longer to install since I had to be sure the tape was edge to edge on every carpet piece.

Better quality than most other stair treads

I was actually blown away by these stair treads. These are MUCH better quality than other ones I’ve gotten in the past. They are very cushioned and soft. They feel great on your feet and they reduce noise from walking on the steps. I actually really like them.

Nice looking and soft

I got these for the stairs going up to the kitchen. Mom installed them and said they stick really well on newly painted stairs.
