How many stair treads do you need?

Count the number of steps you actually walk on, not the number of risers. A Jsei 15-pack of stair treads covers 15 walkable steps; most US single-family staircases have 13–16. If you plan to leave the top landing bare, subtract one.

Count the treads(the flat surfaces) from the bottom step to the top floor — do not count the landing.

Deduct any step you want to leave bare, such as a carpeted top step already covered.

Add one spare if the staircase gets heavy pet traffic, since one tread will be in the wash.

Round up to the pack size — a 15-pack for 13 steps is normal, and spares are useful at the most-used step.

Do non-slip stair treads damage wood stairs or leave residue?

A TPR self-grip backing does not need adhesive, so there is no glue residue to sand off. The real risks to a wood staircase are trapped moisture and grit under the mat, both of which are controlled by lifting the treads periodically and keeping them dry.

Clean and dry the step before the first installation — dust stops the backing from contacting the wood.

Press the full surface for 30 seconds, especially the nosing area where feet land.

Test with five firm steps on the tread before using the staircase normally.

Lift and wipe every 4–6 weeks in humid months; air dry both the step and the tread before re-laying.

How do you measure stair treads before ordering?

Polypropylene is the better choice where water and grease dominate, because the fibre repels liquid instead of absorbing it. Polyester is the better choice where foot comfort matters more, because the pile is softer — but spills must be wiped promptly.

What to Test How to Measure Judgment Threshold
Tread Depth Measure from front nosing back to riser root Mat depth ≤ Measured depth − 0.5 in
Tread Width Wall to wall, or wall to open edge ≥ 1 in clearance on each side
Front Edge Profile Inspect for bullnose rounded edge Bullnose edge → Select bullnose style
Tread Depth Consistency Spot-check top & bottom tread depth If difference > 0.5 in, size by the smallest depth

Dimension Jsei Stair Treads Stair Runner
Coverage Individual per step, original floor exposed between treads Continuous coverage over the full stairway

Stair treads or a stair runner — which is safer for dogs and older adults?

Stair treads are the safer choice when the staircase is wood, the household has a dog or an older adult, and you want the option to remove and wash each piece. A stair runner is the safer choice when the staircase is already carpeted or when you want continuous coverage with no gaps between pieces.

Stair Treads FAQS

What is a bullnose stair tread?

A bullnose tread has a rounded front edge that wraps over the nosing of the step. It protects the most worn part of a wood stair and removes the sharp lip a toe or paw can catch on.

Will stair treads work on carpeted stairs?

Not reliably. A TPR backing needs a hard, smooth surface to grip; on carpet, two soft surfaces slide against each other. Use treads on bare wood, tile or vinyl stairs.

How do I keep stair treads from shifting when a dog runs up?

Press the tread down across its full area for 30 seconds on a clean dry step, then test it with five firm steps. If a tread still creeps, the step likely has wax, polish or dust on it — clean with a damp cloth and let it dry fully.

Can stair treads be cut to fit an odd step width?

Cutting a tread exposes the backing edge, so trim only where the cut will sit against a wall, and keep the bound edge on the open side. Measure twice: width, depth and nosing shape all matter.

Are stair treads safe for toddlers and pets?

Jsei stair treads use OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified materials and a grippy surface that gives paws and small feet something to push against. They reduce slip risk on bare wood; they are not a substitute for a stair gate or supervision.

Soft and comfortable stair treads

This is an awesome set of stair treads. They are easy to install - just peel off the protective plastic on the underside and place on your stair. The are soft and comfortable underfoot - just the right thickness. While they are nice underfoot, I also got them to help our puppy navigate the wooden steps. These treads gave her confidence to go up and come down on her own without fear of slipping or falling. They wash well and are just as soft as when brand new.A great but and great rtead.

Easy to install

The stair treads are fantastic. They stay put and are still perfectly in place after several weeks. They have made going down the stairs so much easier for my dog, as well. It took me about 10 minutes to get these set up and was so simple. They look great, too!

So far so great

The installation took a little longer than I was expecting and we did it as a team effort. Instructions had us break out a hairdryer to warm the glue before peeling the backing off. While it took some time, the results are well worth it! The carpeting is soft with a design that fits perfectly on our stairs. I haven't noticed any movement of any of the carpets nor any peeling up around the corners. They've been installed for about a month now. This is my second set carpet treads for my basement stairs after the first suffered from peeling and moving and I am much happier with these so far. Recommend these and be sure to take your time installing them to do it right!!

The steps are no longer slippery!!!!!!

I put these on the stairs about 2 a weeks ago and I love them. I love how they look, and they are cushy on my feet also. I mainly got them for our elder dog who won't go up and down the wood stairs and there were no issues. They don't slip, are easy to install and look great. Great find. They stuck nicely to the stairs. Go slow when taking the film off the back. I didn't have any issues removing it. I like the fact that they are removable and washable. Good stair carpets for making stairs safer to walk on

Reviewing: Non-Slip Stair Treads for Wooden Steps Indoor, 15 Pack 9" X 28" Edging Stair Carpet Mat with TPE Backing, 0.4" Thick Stair Runners for Kids Elders & Pets, 100% Polyester Soft Stair Rugs:I ordered these stair rugs because I have steep hardwood stairs that tend to be slippery, and I'm expecting an elderly guest in my home. I didn’t want to go to the expense of having carpet fitted on my stairs. These stair rugs are a cost-effective choice, and 15 is the right number of mats for my staircase. My only criticism is that it took a long time to get the plastic backing off these carpet strips. I was expecting the plastic to peel off in one or two pieces, but instead, the plastic peeled off in small strips. I hoped they'd become easier with practice, but it didn't really happen. The undersides of the rugs are sticky enough, though, and I was impressed with how easy the carpets were to position on the stairs. It takes a bit of time and patience, but they're quite easy to use.The carpet strips are not wide enough to cover the whole of each stair, but they do cover the middle area, where most of the walking happens. They’re softer to walk on than I expected; the pile is quite plush, and they’re not cheap-looking. They’re definitely designed for indoor use, I think. Even though they’re washable, they don’t look weatherproof. They look like the normal kind of soft carpet that you’d have in your home.I haven’t tried washing these yet, but I think putting them on a “delicates” cycle in the machine would be the right way to do it. I hope that vacuuming them regularly would save me the trouble of having to unstick them from the stairs too often. I would recommend these if you’re looking for a cost-effective way to make stairs safer, or more comfortable to walk on. They look more attractive than I was expecting too, and carpeted stairs definitely give a warmer look to a home. They function well, and look good, so I’m happy to recommend them.

Plush, Attractive Treads

Very nice treads, the nonslip backs have several long strips that ensures the tread remains in contact with the stair from edge to edge. The carpet is soft and very comfortable to walk on. The color is subtle yet attractive. My husband is an amputee and he safely ascends and descends without the treads sliding or moving when wearing his prosthetic leg. The treads also withstand grandkids running up and down without any slips or falls. A very attractive addition to a stairwell.

Looks great easy to install.

The media could not be loaded. Nice stair treads. These carpet stair treads are nice and soft. It comes with 15 so you have enough for every step. The pattern is a stepUp from my last set and it looks so much nicer than the plain flat ones I had before. I got brown with the white and there look really nice. The treads are washable and you can vacuum them. They have a non slip backing that feels kinda like silicone but it’s TPE and that keeps them in place so they don’t move and cause a fall and they stay out very well. They are super simple to install. Just clean your steps and peel the backing cover off then place them where you want them and your done. Of course you want to make sure to line them up in the same spot on each step so they look nice.I really like the quality and look of the treads. They are soft and stay in place and was a definite upgrade for the plain stairs. They fit perfectly and were a decent price They seem like them are durable enough to last a long while and I like that they are not just flat carpet but a little fluffy.

Amazing great product!!!

This made a great addition to our house!!! It looks great changed the style of the stairs. Also make the stairs for the kids much safer since my 4 yr old is always trying to run or jump on the stairs which are wood now it makes it nonslip so he can't slide or get hurt. It fit perfectly on my stairs and the installation was really simple and easy to apply them to my stairs. I thought it was going to be like a sticker kind of film on the back side but its really not it has these stripes on the back which grip to the floor making them stay in place its just great. The instructions are well written and easy to understand.

Stair pads made it easier for my dog to navigate up and down

The media could not be loaded. These stair pads are very well made. They are plush and thick and sealed off around all the edges well. They have totally made a difference in how my stairwell sounds as it absorbs much of the clacking sounds of my shoes on the wooden stairs themselves. I did primarily got these for my senior dog as she has mild sight loss and starting to slip on the stairs as it’s hard for her to see the darker colored stairs with her eyes. These patterned mats helped her visually distinguished the difference between steps to stop her from miss stepping. The only thing I didn’t like, and this is extreme, is how difficult was to tear the plastic pieces from the backing off. The plastic should be a different color (instead of clear) such that one could see which portion was peeled off and which portion wasn’t because when looking at it, the grippy pieces are shiny too, and it’s hard to see overall. It’s crazy that they often tear off in little pieces rather than one whole strip, which caused more work for me. My other stair cushions that I had purchased are not like this. For this challenge and frustration I’m taking off 1 star as the prep for application was very difficult. It took me well over 1.5 hours when it should’ve just been a simple peel and stick, peel and stick system.

A+ all the way!!

Absolutely fantastic carpeted stair treads!! Haven't even finished construction of the stairwell yet & I'm already loving them. These are going to look epic once we're done!Good medium thickness pile. Beautiful colors and design. Well sewn without any loose or stray strings anywhere. The pads are already fairly non-slip just sitting on bare plywood as is. I can see how once the stairs are finished and the sticky sticker covers are removed that these treads won't be sliding anywhere.Very happy with this set!! Think I'll be ordering a second to finish off the landing in the same design.

They stick mostly well

I've tried other brands of stair treads that require using carpet tape to adhere them, but wanted something where I didn't need to spend a lot of time cleaning up old adhesive residue. The pattern and color are well suited for my stairs, which is what immediately caught my eye. Upon close inspection, the pattern isn't consistent across all the 15 treads in the package but does take a keen eye to notice. Installation is straightforward, although getting all the plastic backing off each one was rather tedious, and even when using a hair dryer as recommended, some of the backing tore away and left behind a bit, which then was difficult to peel off. However, once ready to place down, they do have a good amount of tackiness to them, and initially stayed in place. These treads have a nice pile to them and are soft on the feet. The edges are what concern me the most, as they stick up since the strips don't go edge to edge. On the second day after installing them and having a lot of walking up and down, one of my cats decided it would be a good idea to play on one of the stairs. One of her claws caught the tread and both the tread and cat went down the remaining stairs. So, although these are marketed as for pets, if you have pets with claws, you might consider augmenting them with carpet tape.

Actual carpet and stays on pretty good

I recently removed the old and awful carpet on the stairs to the basement. We did not want to recarpet so after a good sanding I painted them with dark brown deck paint (nothing better than exterior paints for longevity indoors). The stairs look great but with pets they get dusty really fast. So these treads seemed a good idea to help make it easier to clean. Just a quick vacuum and done. And they work. Putting them down was clearly easy since all you do is just place them where you want. They are well made, thick, and the edges are finished well so I do not think they'll start to fall apart any time soon. The pictures have them outside the door and surprisingly they did not come off the concrete steps when we tried to slide them by pushing your foot on them. They are a bit expensive at $71.99 but in light of quality, the fact you can launder them, and that they really do not slip I can honestly RECOMMEND!

High Pile Carpet, Very Soft!

We have a terrible old wooden staircase that needs to be refinished desperately, but it’s way down on the home improvement list. Using these carpet runners as a temporary fix instead has made the stairway look much nicer, with the criss-cross design adding a bit of style to the steps. The carpet of the runners is super soft on bare feet and has a nice thick cozy high pile, which I wasn’t expecting! Most runners seem to be pretty thin but these are nicely thick. My dogs also seem to love them, going up and down those shady wood stairs is much easier on their paws & legs now.The stitching is very well done and they seem to be of high quality in general. They really work great and the price for so many of them is a great value! The only negative I have about these is the plastic on the bottoms was really hard to remove, and I got a bit frustrated trying to get them off! Some peeled right off but most would get caught up and start ripping off-center, which necessitated in sliding a sharp paring knife under the plastic to remove what was left behind without damaging the carpet or the rubber sticky bits underneath. It’s an odd way of adding protective plastic. Once you’re rid of it though they’re super easy to install, just place them in position and press down all around to stick them to the floor. They stick very well so far. I’m very happy with them!

Great addition

These are fantastic. The hardest part was peeling the plastic off the back. The grip is great, so no movement when walking on them. They are washable as well, which I absolutely love! All in all, great value for the money.
